Abdominal plastic surgery, or abdominoplasty,
is performed to remove excess skin. The scar is low and generally hidden
beneath swimwear.
In abdominoplasty, the surgeon must correct not only the excess tissue, but also
reinforce the entire musculature through a procedure called muscular plicature.
Thus, the patient's abdominal wall is reinforced, thereby improving his/her functional
part.
Currently, with the increasing demand for bariatric surgery - surgery to reduce
the size of the stomach to promote significant weight loss in extremely obese
patients - patients seek out plastic surgeons to rid themselves of excess tissue
after the weight loss. These procedures, known as body contouring surgery, achieved
a tremendous ally in the end of the 70's: liposuction. As each case is specific,
it is up to the surgeon to decide if there is a need to remove only excess fat
through liposuction, or if it is necessary to also remove excess skin through
a procedure called dermolipectomy.
