The breast
The symbol of femininity, it is exalted by the arts and literature.
Over the last few decades, the concept of beauty in relation to the size and
shape of the breast has changed.
Women with very large breasts (a deformity called mammary hypertrophy)
are operated using Pitanguy’s classic technique, in which
the excess tissue is removed, modeling the breasts and thereby
endowing them with a new lighter and esthetically more satisfying
contour.
Other times, the breasts are discreetly and moderately enlarged,
and a smaller procedure, known as augmentation mammaplasty, in
the Pitanguy rhomboid or vertical technique, or the Arié-Pitanguy
technique.
When the breasts are significantly small (mammary hypoplasia), the recommended
surgery is the insertion of silicone prosthesis (or breast implants). The more
important aspects to be discussed with the patient are: the desired breast size;
the type of implant to be used and the point of access to insert the prosthesis.
Gynecomastia
The increase in mammary volume in men, or gynecomastia, invariably has psychological
repercussions. Gynecomastia is the most common mammary alteration in male patients,
representing approximately 70% of mammary pathologies. The excess tissue is removed
through liposuction. If necessary, the surgeon removes a bit of the gland, leaving
a camouflaged scar within the aureole.
