IVO PITANGUY INSTITUTE
It is a non-profit entity aimed at the instruction, research and disclosure of the Plastic Surgery as well as the provision of free medical services in the restoring Plastic Surgery area for the low income's population. Approximately 50,000 patients have already been operated in the 38th Infirmary of Santa Casa da Misericórdia hospital, an average of 1,800 surgeries per year made in the three surgery rooms that compound the surgical center. The Ivo Pitanguy Institute, former CEIP - Centro de Estudos Ivo Pitanguy (Ivo Pitanguy Study Center) collects the properties of the 38th Infirmary of Santa Casa de Misericórdia and of the Ivo Pitanguy Clinic and it was founded in 1975 by Professor Ivo Pitanguy.
The Ivo Pitanguy Institute is also aimed at improving and developing theoretical and practical knowledge of the post graduate students in Plastic Surgery of Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro), Carlos Chagas Institute of Medical Post-graduate Studies and other institutions. It receives annually national and foreign visiting surgeons for up to three month periods.
The Ivo Pitanguy Institute's collection began at the end of the 50s and it is considered one of the most important collections of the country regarding the Plastic Surgery subject. The Ivo Pitanguy Institute's documentation is being reorganized in order to be available for consultation in this Site and its aim is to provide access to information, providing assistance to the scientific community for the development of the instruction and of the research. It currently has about 625,000 documents in the collections of video, slides, books, periodicals, monographs and photographs, beside the main data bases in the area of the Health Sciences.
The collection also includes part of Professor Ivo Pitanguy's mails and an historical series of magazine and newspaper clipping. The photographic and audiovisual collections are constantly used for didactical purposes and scientific presentations in congresses, journeys and symposiums. The scientific production of the Ivo Pitanguy Institution is divulged through articles published in National and International periodicals.
The Ivo Pitanguy Institute published the Plastic Surgery Bulletin, a bimonthly bilingual scientific publication, during 26 years.

The Ivo Pitanguy Institute has a comfortable amphitheater with internal circuit television linked to the surgical center that is used to broadcast the demonstrative surgeries, classes, lectures and conferences of faculty and of the guest professor doctors.
