In 1960 the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, through its Post-Graduate
Medical School, created the Plastic Surgery Chair which, together with the
8th Infirmary of the Santa Casa General Hospital, became the Department of
Plastic Surgery of that institution. Ivo Pitanguy was designated Head Professor,
and he subsequently founded the Post-Graduate
Course in Plastic Surgery. In 1962, the 8th Infirmary suffered various changes and restorations and became the 38th Infirmary, as it is known till this day.
Prof. Pitanguy's Service in the 38th Infirmary has as its main objective the treatment of the less-privileged population of Rio de Janeiro and other states, and also from overseas, who present with physical deformities, congenital, acquired or traumatic. This service is voluntary, offered altruistically by Prof. Pitanguy and his team of collaborators, and has attended many thousands of patients, giving them an opportunity to be reintegrated into society.
The several different
attributions of this Infirmary are divided in the
