PROFESSOR IVO PITANGUY

Ivo Pitanguy´s Clinic
In 1963, Pitanguy founded his clinic aiming to link it with the 38th infirmary and with the post graduation course in plastic surgery. A year later, he created the Ivo Pitanguy Study Center, presently called Ivo Pitanguy´s Institute. This pioneer structure allows the students not only to learn but to practice the specialty as well as to consult its scientific basis in the library of the clinic. The students are also able to watch the surgeries performed by their master. Ivo Pitanguy´s Clinic, a center of excellence in plastic surgery, became an international reference of the specialty. From its foundation to the present day, over 50,000 patients have been operated on in the clinic. A staff of plastic surgeons, supervised by Dr. Pitanguy acts following his techniques and philosophy.

Santa Casa at present
Every Wednesday, Dr. Pitanguy goes to the 38th plastic surgery infirmary to guide surgeries and discuss more complex cases with his assistants. There, he also shares his experience with his medical students. A pioneer and reference of excellence in the formation of plastic surgeons, the 38th infirmary became a sort of “Mecca” of plastic surgery in Brazil, visited by doctors from all over the world who wish to start their career or to improve their knowledge in plastic surgery. A staff of 40 doctors, between instructors and assistants, perform approximately a thousand surgeries per year – the majority of patients presenting congenital deformities, trauma sequels, burns and tumors. Aesthetic surgeries are also performed, since Dr. Pitanguy believes that any discomfort with ones own image must be considered. “For me, there are no ‘small things’ in a human body. From the moment a patient has only one ear, one finger or any kind of deformity, this ‘small thing’ becomes a great loss. My role is to help those who come to me with the hope of having a normal life,” says Pitanguy. The 38th infirmary of Santa Casa is a part of the post graduation course in Plastic Surgery. Besides the surgical and nursing staff, there is a multidisciplinary group composed of psychologist, nutritionist, physiotherapist, cardiologist, orthodontist, photographer and social assistant.

Scientific production
Ivo Pitanguy is the author of more than 800 papers published in international scientific magazines, prefaces and book chapters. His book, “Plastic Surgery of the Head and Body,” which was launched in 1981 at the Frankfurt Book Fair, received the prize for the best scientific book of that year and became an important didactic and scientific source. Pitanguy was also responsible for the creation of “The Plastic Surgery Bulletin,” a publication of the scientific papers of his service edited bi-monthly, from 1971 to 1997. The papers produced after this period can be obtained through an e-mail request to the Pitanguy Institute.

From 1975 to 1985, Ivo Pitanguy was president of the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM). In 1999, the life and social work of Pitanguy was the theme of the samba school Caprichosos de Pilares, with the theme
“The Universe of Beauty – Master Pitanguy”. It was a spontaneously popular demonstration of respect and admiration that deeply touched Ivo Pitanguy.

Life mission
In Brazil, the name Pitanguy became both verb and adjective, immortalized by poets and writers such as Vinicius de Moraes, Rubem Braga and Carlos Drummond de Andrade. In the world, he is practically synonymous with plastic surgery. The glories do not change the Pitanguy of Belo Horizonte. “All of us are shy to talk about our efforts. The human being who thinks and produces knows that he has not produced enough. And judges that what he made is only a small part of all he could have made. The overcoming of our work by those who will follow us is what defines humanity’s progress. The great joy is to feel a bond which prepares the next in line in the chain,” says Pitanguy.

Right of Beauty
The search for beauty, for well being, is a right of all. For Professor Pitanguy the greatest goal in plastic surgery is to be able to give to anyone, regardless of their race, beliefs or social class, harmony and peace with their own image.
