ECOLOGICAL SANCTUARY

Ecological Sanctuary

“The official discoverer of Angra dos Reis was Martim Afonso de Souza, who arrived there on January 6th, 1532 and being enchanted by the site’s beauty, named it Angra dos Reis (King’s Bay), in honor of the Three Wise Kings. This same nature that enchanted André Gonçalves, Américo Vespucio, D. Pedro II and all those that have seen it has resisted several invasions, some battles and the permanent progress approach down the ages. As I see its inlets, the mountains and the peak of Serra da Bocaina, I feel the same emotion as Américo Vespucio, who exclaimed: “Oh, God! If there was a paradise on earth, it wouldn’t be far from here!” at the sight of all this beauty. - Ivo Pitanguy, extract from its book: Angra dos Reis: Baia dos Reis Magos, São Paulo, Marprint, Ind. - Proj. Cultural Clínica Ivo Pitanguy Ltda.

ILHA DOS PORCOS GRANDE (BIG PIG'S ISLAND)

Ilha dos Porcos Grande is located in the Bay of Angra dos Reis. It is within a region known as Costa Esmeralda, in the southern of the State of Rio de Janeiro, this bay represents one of the most beautiful regions of Brazil, where the blue sea meets the mountains covered by the dark-green of the Atlantic forest. Angra's Bay protects more than 350 big and small islands from the fierce southwestern wind.

Ecological SanctuaryIlha dos Porcos Grande is more than a simple refuge from the urban life. There, it can be noticed a concern for nature preservation and an architecture in full harmony with the environment.

According to the environmental preservation rules and through an IBAMA's license (IBAMA - Brazilian Institute of the Environment), the island has been converted into a farm of sylvan animals, where the fauna of the Atlantic Forest is raised and protected from human threats.
