ECOLOGICAL SANCTUARY

Breeding of the "Ilha dos Porcos Grande"

Ecological SanctuaryAs we arrive at the island, there is a large natural aquarium, reaching up to seven meters depth. This fishy farm has several marine species of different sizes and it is isolated in one edge of the beach, forming a small bay, with the construction of a dam that separates it from the sea.

The water renewal and oxygenation is ordinarily processed through pipes throughout the dam's basis that are connected to the sea. There can be found many fishes such as jewfish, grouper, blue parrotfish, baiacu (sphoeroides spenglers), leatherback turtle, octopus and skate. There are also some birds, such as white-necked heron, brown booby, magnificent fregatebird, little egret, black-necked swan and mandarin duck.

Fresh sardines are daily offered to the animals. Thus, they get used to stay in the farm.

Ecological SanctuaryFor the exotic animals, there were built nests in a synthetic material which are named quelaps. They refer to light alloy cement frames, forged with iron or wire screen, with different forms and dimensions, which serve as nests and food and watering places for the animals. Such structures perfectly meet the most varied uses, without significantly altering the sight as the objective is to be as similar as possible as to the environment.

Many different species of birds were brought to the island, which reproduced and, presently, they can be seen all over the island flying freely. Among these birds, we can see Brazilian Tanagers, Sayaca Tanagers, Safron Finches, Long Tailed Reed Finches, Rufous-bellied Thrushes, Bananaquits, tropical mockingbirds, Cream-bellied Thrusts (Turdus amaurochalinus) , Green-winged Saltators, among several others.

Ecological SanctuaryA relatively large group of agoutis is kept free throughout the island and they feed themselves from fruits that fall from the trees (jack fruits, coconuts, guavas, mulberries, jabuticabas, etc.), besides what is offered to them (pumpkin, carrot, manioc, etc.) in bunches properly chopped placed at a proper height for these animals.
